The mode of transmission of hereditary materials which are responsible for the inherited characteristics of all plants and animals is presented. Live action and animation are used to demonstrate what happens when the egg and sperm of red-coated and white-coated cattle meet to form the zygote and when mitosis occurs. Over animation superimposed on live shots of the resulting roan calf, the narrator explains how both sets of genes influence the color of this animal. The effects of mating two roan animals are then similarly explained. In this case 1/4 of the calves will be red, 1/2 of them roan, and 1/4 of them white. Guinea pig crosses produce slightly different results. Over shots of black and white guinea pigs, animation and animation superimposed on live shots, black dominance in these animals is explained. Rough-coated dominance in guinea pigs is similarly explained, as is black or white combined with rough or smooth dominance.
