The purpose of this presentation is to describe and demonstrate the characteristics of the cultured cells taken originally from a patient with cervical carcinoma. This objective is achieved with the aid of time lapse photography taken at various speeds. In this presentation the harvesting of the cells and the preparation of the culture are first described and demonstrated in a step-by-step fashion. The development of the freshly transferred culture is then demonstrated as itis photographed at one frame per minute. This is then accelerated to demonstrate the characteristic shifting motions of the cells; Nuclear rotation is also demonstrated and described in detail. The mitosis of normal and abnormal cells, tripolar mitosis, quadripolar mitosis, and chromosomal movements are described and demonstrated. A giant cell with multiple nuclei is shown and the multiple filopodia typical of this Hela cell are demonstrated and described in detail. Pinocytosis is also described and demonstrated. The cell is then shown photographed with oil immersion objective and phase contrast optics to demonstrate the cell organs such as the mitochondria, vacuoles, hyperprotein granules, and Golgi apparatus.
