A portrait of William Osler and Jared Howard, taken in Berlin, in 1884. Osler and Howard, son of R. Palmer Howard, Osler's teacher and colleague at McGill University School, spent the summer of 1884 in Germany as a break from what Osler called, "the excessive drudgery of teaching". Osler was then nearing the end of his time as a professor at McGill Medical School and would soon move to Philadelphia. Jared Howard was then a demonstrator in anatomy at McGill..
