Abstract:
This program urges people with Hansen's disease to check their feet carefully each day, since lack of sensation will lead to injury, and takes them through a multi-step, thorough foot self-inspection. Patients are told to look for calluses, redness, or openings in the skin. They must check each toe individually and look for discolored or thickened nails and white tissue between toes. "Hot spots" are signs of injury, indicating a pressure problem. Red circles drawn on the foot indicate where one should check for tenderness. A combination of redness, tenderness, swelling, and heat is a sign of a serious condition and should be medically checked out immediately. The video advises on prevention--moisturizing feet, filing calluses, and clipping toenails straight across. Later the program presents the proper types of footwear to support affected feet.
