Editors at Harvard's student newspaper, The Crimson, complained when Varmus was selected to be the 1996 commencement speaker (and receive an honorary doctorate); they didn't think him "glamorous" enough, and expected that graduating students would be similarly disappointed. Dissenting writers expressed their views more briefly on the same page.
