In November 2008, the AARP Public Policy Institute held an Innovation Roundtable, bringing together public health experts to discuss a range of issues related to the value of prevention. The discussion addressed efforts to control tobacco use and their applicability to reducing obesity. This Insight on the Issues expands on that discussion. Specifically, it discusses the growing problem of obesity, some lessons learned from the experience of the campaign to reduce smoking, some promising strategies for applying these lessons to the effort to reduce obesity and their success so far, and policy recommendations.
