Verso: WHO/15071. General Hospitals. There are few more significant pointers to progress in health care than the growth in importance of the hospital. Once it was little more than a place for the poor and incurably sick to die in, but medical, scientific and technical advance, coupled with far-reaching social and economic change and growth, brought about a transformation. Hospitals become strongholds, isolated fortresses against illness and disease. Now this is giving place to a new concept: the hospital is emerging from isolation, reaffirming its links with the community, and developing into a centre for an array of thereaperutic, preventive, rehabilitative and educational medical services. Today, at l'Hotel-Dieu in Beaune, the old trandiditon of kindness has been supplemented by modern scientific methods of therapy.
