Although Norway is engaged in a nation-wide effort against cancer, the statistics show that the disease is not a more serious problem in this country than elsewhere. The diffrence is that the Norwegians have reacted to the situation, and the Norwegian Cancer Society is leading the movement and providing funds. This non-profit institution in supported by all the public and academic bodies of the country- the medical faculties of Oslo and Bergen, the Medical Association, the Health Service, the Red Cross etc. Over a twenty-year period, more than ten million dollars have been collected for a total population of only 3.8 million. Among the Society's achivements may be mentioned the enlargement of the Radium Hospital, researches on cancer, a breast cancer case- finding programs covering 130,000 women, the setting up of the cancer registry, the provision of social assistance for patients, and health education of the public.
