The first Asia-Pacific Congress on Diseases of the Chest of the American College of Chest Physicians took place in Kyoto, Japan, in 1969. It began because the International Congress on Diseases of the Chest, also sponsored by the ACCP, took place every other year in countries around the world, but many were unable to attend for financial reasons. The Asia-Pacific Congress provided Asian doctors with a comparable meeting much closer to home.
