In honor of "his untiring pedagogic and investigative efforts," the trustees of Baylor College of Medicine built and established the Michael E. DeBakey Center for Biomedical Education and Research in 1978, recognizing DeBakey's crucial role in the creation and rise to prominence of the medical school. In a 1983 interview, DeBakey noted that the trustees wanted to create a facility "that's a research facility, but it also is a learning facility teaching students." He went on to say that he "had nothing to do with naming it" and that "I'm humbly gratefully about that, but the important thing is that we were able to raise funds for the building." The crane in the photo appears to be holding a miniature pine tree.
