Highway traffic deaths were starting to emerge as a significant public health problem during the 1950s; as Fogarty stated here, the states were not addressing the problem adequately. The committee's investigations would ultimately lead to federal funding for myriad traffic safety improvements, from signs to emergency responder equipment such as ambulances.
