- Presented at the 1963 Albert Lasker Medical Research Awards Luncheon. Fogarty talked about growing public distrust of "big science" and "big government" at the time, and how to respond to critics, using solid information about funding decisions and priorities (and the beneficial outcomes). He also discussed the importance of basic research, and scientific education, and gave a good summary of what the public got in return for this support, including "cracking of the genetic code." He also addressed fears that government funding might endanger research quality, a point his critics often raised.
