"The Specimen Fasciculus, Billings' model of his proposed bibliography of medicine. At this time he was referring to the collection as the 'National Medical Library,' but when the Index-Catalogue appeared in 1880 the title page bore the name the collection carried for the next three-fourths of a century, 'Surgeon General's Library.' Behind the Specimen are early volumes of the Index-Catalogue, which contined to be published until 1961." -- Page 119, A history of the National Library of Medicine, by Dr. Wyndham D. Miles.
