When Surgeon Joseph Lister (1827-1912), at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1865, removed carbolic acid dressings from a compound fracture wound, there was no infection--something unheard of before. Lister's principles of antisepsis revolutionized wound treatment and surgical procedures.
