From March 18 to June 23, 1925, Dr. Sawyer traveled to Colombia to inspect the hookworm and malaria control programs there and visit local health departments. The journey to Bogata took him up the Magdalena River by boat and, on this flooded stretch, by balsa-wood raft. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Flooded houses on the banks of the Magdalena River below Girardot, Colombia. Taken from the raft. Apr. 29, 1925."
