Presented as the Charles Franklin Craig Lecture at the 46th annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 12/10/97. Varmus described some of NIH's recent initiatives in global health, especially malaria control, and reflected on the connections between political conditions and health. Later, as president of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, he would become more deeply involved in global health efforts through work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
