In this address (which Varmus later shared with Senator Tom Harkin during discussions regarding expansion of the Office of Alternative Medicine) Varmus wondered aloud at public perceptions of medical science as overly technologized, unresponsive to "softer" human needs, rejecting of basic preventive measures such as diet and exercise, avoiding tobacco, etc. He also wondered at the perception that there are "two cultures" in health care, and considered what physicians might do to close the gap.
