This letter summarizes the points that Varmus made during an earlier phone conversation with Harkin, including his concerns regarding the lack of enough properly trained investigators at the Office of Alternative Medicine to expand research in Alternative Medicine, the need for such research to be carefully overseen by experienced scientist-administrators, and the role that should be played by other federal agencies--AHCPR, FDA, and the CDC--in evaluating Alternative Medicine. He stressed the advantages of having OAM projects channeled through existing institutes and centers. Dr. Varmus appended to this letter a copy of a graduation speech to Stanford Medical School that June.
