The Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. Prize, of the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation, is named in honor of Mr. Sloan, former president, chairman, and honorary chairman of General Motors, and a moving force behind the creation of the Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York (now part of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center). The prize is awarded annually. Varmus later called it one of the most prestigious awards in biomedical research.
