Electrophoresis is a method for separating electrically charged (ionic) substances dissolved in a solvent, based on differences in their rates of migration across an electric field. In gel electrophoresis, the support medium is a gel, here agarose gel in the form of a thin slab. Varmus used gel electrophoresis to determine the quantity and structure of viral DNA prepared from extracts from the nucleus and cytoplasm (the substance surrounding the nucleus) of cells infected with Avian Sarcoma Virus (ASV). This series of gels shows results at different intervals from the time of infection with ASV.
