In the late 1960s and early 1970s, "radical" students at colleges throughout the United States demanded an increased role for students in university management and called for reforms of the university system in order to make it more responsive to social realities. In this essay, the Lurias supported these efforts and argued that it was time for universities to move beyond their traditional role in American society.
