Robley Williams was one of many virus researchers that Franklin visited during her 1954 trip to the United States. In this letter, he responded to a manuscript draft she had sent. He commented on her theory about TMV's structure -- a cylinder with a central "doughnut hole" -- and how the structure is formed. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the term "doughnut," while acknowledging that it was a vivid one.
