These two lectures were delivered on April 26 and 28, 1972, respectively. Whereas most experimental work on molecular genetics had been performed on prokaryotes, cellular organisms such as bacteria, which lack a true nucleus and nuclear membrane, Crick in his lectures discussed recent work on the genetic control of development in eukaryotes, higher organisms that do possess a true cell nucleus in which lie chromosomes combined with proteins.
