In this letter regarding a portrait of Watson and Crick commissioned by National Geographic magazine, Crick mentioned that the parts of their original model of the double helix "were dispersed long ago," and sought to dispel popular misconceptions about the size of DNA molecules.. Crick was never knighted, but in 1991 was appointed to the Order of Merit, the highest recognition bestowed by the queen for distinguished service in science.
