Image caption on page 103 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "Patrons and staff are working in the library's History of Medicine Reading room, ca. 1975. In the background, sitting at a desk, is historian Wyndham Miles, author of A History of the National Library of Medicine: The Nation's Treasury of Medical Knowledge (1982). A history of the library had been a dream ever since then-director Frank B. Rogers, MD, began to work on one in the late 1950s. Miles, a historian of chemistry, had been working as a historian for the National Institutes of Health since 1962. At the request of Dr. Martin M. Cummings, Rogers' successor as director, Miles began work on a history of the library. The bibliography of this book includes Miles's History among selected other books and articles about library, its history, and its collections and resources."
