Dr. Donald S. Fredrickson, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is standing in the middle of ten people at the opening in Fredrick, Md. of the first maximum containment facility (P4) for recombinant DNA research. There is equipment on both walls. Among those in the group are Dewitt Stetten, deputy director for science of NIH, Thomas Malone, deputy director of NIH, and Richard Krause, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
