- Image caption on page 92 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "Martin M. Cummings, MD meets with a delegation of Chinese officials, ca. mid 1970s. Cummings' leadership transformed the library from a national resource into a unique international force and one of the most advanced scientific libraries in the world. Testifying to this change were many international visits involving Cummings, to the library and to other locations on the campus of the National Institutes of Health and overseas. From left: three Chinese dignitaries, Cummings, and Donald S. Fredrickson, MD, Director of the National Institutes of Health from 1975 to 1981. The leadership tenure of Cummings coincided with US President Richard Nixon normalizing American relations with the People's Republic of China. Between 1972 and 1978, five Chinese delegations visited the library to establish mutually-beneficial relationships, from Chinese participation in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLARS) to assisting the library in cataloging its collection of traditional Chinese medical literature. Cummings subsequently traveled to China in 1978 to solidify relations, as part of a delegation of the American Association for the Advancement of Science."
