General-Smallpox. Jeers and cheers for Jenner. The advent of smallpox vaccination was the opening of a great chapter int he history of world medicine, but there were vested interests at stake and Jenner's method was oppposed by incculation specialists. However, after a good many tests and counter tests, all of which were successful, the wind started to turn. It became increasingly difficult for the opponets to argue their case after Pearson and Woodville, two prominent figures in British medicine, had confirmed Jenner's results. Our picture: the subject of vaccination discussed before a meeting of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
