Drought is most terrible for young children, and for their mothers, helplessy unable to feed them. Even in normal circumstances, malnutrition is common among African women. Food may be plentiful, but unless it contains enough protein their health cannot fail to suffer. Also, traditional and superstious beliefs about what should or should not be eaten during pregnancy and lactation mean that the child has a bad start in life.
