Verso: "Mental illness and mental health in the world of today"- World Health Day 1959. World Health Day, obsereved every year on 7 April, marks the anniversary of the coming into force of the constitution of the World Health Organization in 1948. The theme chosen for 1959 is "Mental Illness and Mental Health in the World of Today" and subject which, although of vital and growing concern to countries at all stages of economic devlopment is little understood by the public generally. Finding one's place in the grown-up world: "The passage from adolescence to the grown-up world is often a stormy one and fraught with dangers to mental health... The failure of grown-ups to recognize and understood the basic needs of adolescents is usually the main single factor that prevents their sound development into adulthood. How are we to help adolescents to achieve a smooth and sucessful transition into adulthood? There is still no universal answer to this critical problem of our times. All the world over, societies are suffering more and more from the failure of this transition maifested in the form of mental ill-health among the young and juvenile deliquency in particular." So says Dr. Tsung-y Lin, Professor of Psychiatry at the National Taiwan University, in one of a series of articles edited by WHO's Division of Public Information on the occasion of World Health Day.
