The heart, a symbol of life. Statistics show that cardiovasular diseases are the leading causes of death in adults today, and their incidence seems to be on the increase. WHO has launched a number of projects in several countries to obtain more knowledge about the factors which affect the heart and blood vessels. In a special issue World Health illustrates aspects of the research that is going on in this field. Our photo shows Dr. Zdenek Rychter of the University of Prague who for several years has been working on producing malformations experimentally in chick embryos. Dr. Rychter produces his own tools for his very delicate operations. Here he is making a glass pipette for inserting liquid into the chick embryo arteries. The orifice of the pipette is only 20 to 30 microns in diameter.
