The heart, A symbol of life. Statistics show that cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of deatth in adults today, and their incidence seems to be on the increase. WHO has launched a number of projects in several countries to obtain more knowledge about the factors which affect the heart and blood vessels. In a special issue World Health illustrates aspects of the research that is going on in thsi field. The machine that will take over the functions of the patients's heart and lungs during the operation is here installed outside the opertaing theatre. Left is the pumping system that will send blood coursing through the patient's arteries and veins. When the blood passes back through the machine is it oxygenated in the two shallow tanks right.
