Statistics show that cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death in adults today, and their incidence seems to be on the increase. WHO has launched a number of projects in several countries to obtain more knowledge about the factors which affect the heart and blood vessels. In a special issue World Health illustarates aspects of the research that is going on in the field. Professor Lara Werko of the Univeristy Hospital in Goteborg, Sweden, speaks with one of his patients. Most patients actually recover from cardiovascular diseases, e.g. from an acute coronary heart attack, and are able to resume a useful life. It is the role of the physician to inform the patient about his illness and his chances of recovery, and to allay his fears of future disability and eventual economic dependence. The patient's psychological adjustment to the disease depends mostly on the physician in charge.
