Interior view from above of an operating room with an operation in progress; various pieces of equipment are clustered around the table; x-rays hang on the wall to the left for quick consultation. Verso: WHO/15080. General Hospitals. There are few more significant pointers to progress in health care than the growth in importance of the hosipital. Once it was little more than a place for the poor and the incurably sick to die in. But medical, scientific and technical advance, coupled with far-reaching social and economic change and growth, brought about a teandformation. Hospitals became strongholds, isolated fortresses against illness and disease. Now this is giving place to a new concept; the hospital is emrgeing from isolation, reaffirming its links with the community, and developing into a centre for an array of therapeutic, preventive, rehabilitative and educational medical services. Modern equipment of an operation theater.
