- Exterior view: two women walking along a street in a residential area; one of the woman is a volunteer member of the Transportation Corp, and is taking the other woman to a Cancer clinic for treatment. Verso: Early detection of cancer saves lives- World Health Day 7 April 1970. The backbone of the American Cancer Society- its entire body, so to speak- is its volunteer army, more than 2,300,000 strong. They are physicians, and scientists and dentists, as well as bankers, businessmen, artists, housewives and children. The typical volunteer is a housewife who has a few hours a month to give to her local Cancer Society Unit ( there are more than 3,000 such community-sized groups in the USA) making dressing, driving patientsto clinics, acting as a baby-sitters, rasing money. Volunteers persuaded their neighbours to donate more than $50,000,00 to the Society last year.
