Kennedy addressed members of the International Congress on Medical Librarianship on the south lawn of the White House. In his speech, the Kennedy described how advancements in science and medicine create a greater need for the distribution of knowledge within the medical profession, and how medical librarians are instrumental in that distribution. He stated further 'We are proud of those who work in [the National Library of Medicine] and of the other libraries across the country.' Members of the Congress visited the new National Library of Medicine on June 18, 1963."
