Good dental care for children is presented in this film. Teeth are made from the food we eat. A smiling girl sits at a table eating a meal. A diagram shows the parts of a tooth as a pointer indicates the parts. The right foods are necessary for good teeth. Vigorous chewing helps to make strong teeth. Stain and deposits lead to decay. A mouthful of decayed teeth is shown. The dental hygienist helps to keep the mouth healthy. A woman dental hygienist is shown in a dental clinic greeting a boy patient. The child gets into the dentist's chair and has a towel put over his chest. The hygienist cleans his teeth. Some close-ups are shown. The hygienist instructs the boy in the proper method of brushing the teeth. She uses a set of model teeth, and holds the brush up to her own face to demonstrate the up and down brush stroke. Decay usually starts in places that are hard to keep clean--these and the spread of decay are shown in drawings. The dentist can repair decayed teeth. A dentist is shown in a dental clinic with a girl patient in the chair. He drills, prepares, and fills a decayed tooth. A decayed tooth not repaired can lead to death of the tooth and abscess at the root. This process is shown in drawings. Incorrect breathing and finger sucking cause narrow dental arches; a girl demonstrates and the upper teeth are shown in a dental mirror. Sometimes teeth develop poorly because of childhood diseases. Footageis shown of deformed teeth. Crooked teeth can be straightened. One child's teeth are shown before, during, and after orthodontia. Good home care of the teeth is stressed as a teenage girl demonstrates proper care at a bathroom sink. She brushes her teeth and tongue, flosses, and rinses with water into which she has put a white powder, perhaps baking soda or salt.
