Abstract:
(Critical) A thorough demonstration of the technique of capillary sampling in the newborn is presented in this module. Physiology and anatomy are superbly detailed and are supported well by vivid, high quality graphics. The narrator's expressionless face and voice detracts from an otherwise excellent production. Presenting precise, well-organized information throughout, this tape is recommended particularly for nurses and technologists in the pediatric field. and A thorough demonstration of the technique of capillary sampling in the newborn is presented in this module, hosted by Dr. George L. Sharpe. Dr. Sharpe presents a method he believes may preclude serious complications such as local trauma and osteomyelitis (bone infection). The purposes and techniques for capillary sampling are reviewed, followed by slides illustrating the procedure. Examples of things that can go wrong are also presented, with advice on ways to avoid such errors. Finally, the procedure is demonstrated on an infant model.
