Abstract:
(Critical) This program discusses the pathologic anatomy and physiology of chest injuries with the signs and symptoms of early recognition and care. The emphasis is on prehospital care as seen by an emergeny medicine technician or first responder (police or firefighter), a fact which is not stated in this program. The conditions presented are rib fractures, collapsed lung, tension pneumothorax, pericardial tamponade, and impaled object wound. Some of the simulated injuries are staged in an unrealistic fashion. However, considering the difficulty in teaching this important topic this program is recommended with some reservations for prehospital emergency care providers.
