Abstract:
(Critical) As part of a series on "Infants at High Risk" this program discusses the various prenatal, intra-partum and neonatal means of diagnosing and assessing severity of perinatal asphyxia. It lists what is needed in regard to equipment, drugs and expert personnel to carry out successful resuscitation of the asphyxiated newborn. The program also attempts to demonstrate techniques of oropharyngeal suctioning, endotracheal intubation, mask ventilation, external cardiac massage and umbilical catheter placement in the newborn. The technique of endotracheal intubation is incorrectly demonstrated and some of the explorations of pathophysiologic and drug action mechanisms are poorly dealt with. Overall the program presents an informative, complete and generally accurate review of basic pathophysiologic mechanisms of asphyxia and the steps to be taken in resuscitation. It is recommended with some reservations.
