Abstract:
(Critical) Techniques for monitoring anesthetized patients undergoing various neurosurgical procedures are illustrated in this program. Progressing from the most basic to the most complete, monitoring procedures for routine supine craniotomies, sitting posterior fossal craniotomies and the carotid endarterectomies are explained. The inclusion of pathophysiologic background information on such dangers as air embolism and stroke would have extended the materials' relevance to a more diverse group of audiences. Omissions of analytic qualities, information on intracranial pressure monitoring, and rationale for the selection of techniques reduce the programs use as an effective training tool. This logically organized summary of the neuro-anesthesia monitoring techniques employed at the Mayo Clinic, is recommended for use.
