Abstract:
(Critical) This program presents the diagnosis and management of epithelial and pigmented tumors of the conjunctiva, including tumor characteristics, occurrence, location, symptoms, treatment and prognosis. Covered are the classification of pigmented conjunctival tumors, the recognition and diagnosis of benign lesions, the malignant potential of nevi and acquired melanosis, and the treatment of malignant and potentially malignant pigmented conjunctival tumors. The content and educational disign are consistent with the clearly stated objectives. The material is well presented and developed. Several points made by the author can be questioned, however, such as the statements that melanosis oculi is associated with choroidal melanomas, that ochronosis is a non-melanin conjunctival pigmentation, and that exenteration is warranted in cases with minimal stromal invasion of a nevus or acquired melanosis. Overall, the program is appropriate and extremelyimportant for the practicing ophthalmologist and the ophthalmologist in training and is recommended for their use.
