Abstract:
(Critical) Though lacking learning objectives, this program presents a satisfactory review of the causes of intestinal obstruction in the newborn. It begins with the high obstructions in the duodenum and stomach and progresses distally in the bowel concluding with the colon. This approach is logical and easy to follow. The most common causes of mechanical obstruction are discussed, including a clinical discussion and concentrating on the diagnostic steps. The quality of the radiographs is quite good and there is excellent use of diagrams to illustrate the nature of the lesions. The use of various types of contrast material is discussed with respect to each type of intestinal obstruction. In one case of esophageal atresia, a considerable amount of contrast material is present in the proximal pouch. This mode of study is controversial and should have been discussed in greater detail.
