Abstract:
This clinical video features Dr. Paul Brand examining the hands and arms of patients with Hansen's disease. One man has received tendon transfer surgery to improve function in one hand, but no surgery on the other hand, which is less affected. The patient is shown using each hand, and wearing a device that helps train muscles and stretch inner adhesions to counteract the effect of paralyzed muscles. Dr. Brand and Dr. Daniel Riordan then examine and explain the conditions of additional patients. They range from patients who are minimally disabled to those whose hands are disfigured and nonfunctional due to Hansen's disease.
