On this occasion, Vice President Albert Gore (sitting) introduced free MEDLINE searching via the Internet and demonstrated a new system developed by the library called PubMed, which simplified searching for online medical information by researchers and the public alike. The flexibility of PubMed and ease of use prompted Gore to say that free MEDLINE on the Web 'may do more to reform and improve the quality of health care in the United States than anything else we have done in a long time.' As of 2016, more than three million people use PubMed daily as their source of medical information."
