Image caption on page 13 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "Interim Surgeon General King submitted this estimate of expenses to the Secretary of War on November 12, 1836. The last line indicates an estimated cost of $150 for "Medical Books for office." This estimate marks the first time funding was requested specifically to purchase medical books that would remain in the Surgeon General's office rather than for shipment to medical officers and hospitals in the field. It also marks the beginning of the Library of the Office of the Surgeon General, the institutional predecessor of the US National Library of Medicine. Courtesy of the National Archives."
