In 1934, Dr. Sawyer made another trip to Brazil to inspect yellow fever control activities, including an investigation of a puzzling outbreak of the disease in a rural region near the Bolivian border. In a welcome contrast to earlier visits to South America, Sawyer was able to travel by plane to such remote areas, rather than by boat or on horseback. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Arrival in Cuiaba, June 15, 1934. Left to right, Dr. F. L. Soper, Dr. W. A. Sawyer, 2 other passengers. Behind WAS: Mr. Luis, pilot."
