This report highlights three emerging trends that have important implications for increased recognition of and support for addressing the needs of caregiving families: caregiver assessment; consumer direction in family caregiver support services; and collaborations between the aging network and the health care system. The purpose of this report is to provide policymakers, program administrators, and advocates with an overview of these emerging trends, describe state approaches and developing practices, and identify key factors fundamental to successful adoption of these strategies. This report is intended to stimulate continued development and replication of these forward-looking practices to further support and sustain family and informal caregivers.
