This report updates previous analysis of the costs, construction activites, and policy issues stimulated by SB1953, California's hospital seismic safety legislation. Given the large increases in costs for hospital contruction and the rapidly approaching deadlines to comply with seismic safety goals, this report employs new data and analysis on several issues. These include updated and detailed information on hopspital infrastructure and construction costs, hospital decision making for large construction projects, historical and current records of hospital construction in California, and quantitative seismic hazard information for California hospitals. The report assess the overall progress toward SB1953 compliance, identifies plausible deadlines for meeting SB1953's requirements, and quantifies total construction cost senarios that may occur as hospitals rebuild their facilities.
