Interior view of a laboratory: a man and a woman wearing white lab coats conduct experiments in immunology; metal frame structure supports glassware and tubing; the woman stands on a stool and is using a pipette; the man stands next to her. Verso: WHO/11882. General- Immunology. Immunology, which at first was simply concerned with man's resistance to infectious dieseases, is now deeply incolved in basic problems of biochemistry and molecular biology. Research in immunology has gone far beyond the sphere of infectious dieseases and is contributing to tissue transplantation and to our understanding of genetics, cancer, auto-immune disease and allergy, among other subjects. At the WHO Reference Centre for Immunoglobulins in Lausanne, Switzerland.
